I got asked so many questions about sleep training when I posted on IG, so I figured I would put it all in one place for easy access. I just want to clarify that, like everything in parenting, there is no right or wrong way to go about doing this. This is what worked for me with my 3 boys, which is why I wanted to share it with you.
To preface things, my first had a very hard time sleeping and going down on his own. He screamed his bloody face off until someone would come get him, which is why I knew off the bat that I needed a more aggressive approach with him. He is the most chilled kid now so don’t worry if this is you! I tried a few different versions of the "cry it out method" but ultimately nothing really worked. I tried shushing, sleeping on his floor and talking into the monitor but everything just seemed to aggravate him even more. I had to go balls to the wall and moved forward with something more hardcore to see a change. It was NAWT easy, and it took a lot of strength and restraint to see this method through, but I was hopeful that the short term pain would lead to long term gain, and I was right!
With all my kids I waited until they were 4 months old to sleep train them once I got the green light from my pediatrician that they were healthy and their weight gain was solid. For me, it always worked to do nap training at the same time as overnight sleep training. I love a good schedule, so it made sense to just combine them and do it all at once.
All 3 kids were different types of sleepers in the beginning, but it never made a difference. Ultimately, once I introduced the schedule, they all adapted. Some were faster than others - Xander cried for hours on end for a week, whereas Jones cried for 10 min on night 1 - but nonetheless, they all became successfully sleep trained babies!!!
Below is the schedule I implemented for all 3 of them at 4 months old:
7:00am - 7:30am - Wake up
7:30am - Bottle
9:00am - 11:00am - Nap 1
11:30am - Bottle
1:00pm - 3:30pm - Nap 2
3:30pm - Bottle (this gets dropped once food starts)
4:30pm - 5:30pm - Nap 3 (this gets dropped around 6 months and nap time shifts to 1:30pm - 4:30ish)
6:00pm - Bath
6:30pm - Bottle
7:00pm - 7:30pm - Bed
I hope this helps anyone that wants to try the same thing. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below. I am happy to answer or provide support any way I can.
Enjoy your zzzs!
