Marlie Cohen, fitness blogger, and influencer behind Kale and Krunches and new momma to Lily. Marlie, recently featured in a photoshoot with Trish Mennell Photography, talks to us about all things motherhood, fitness, work-life balance and so much more.
A: The most rewarding thing is watching her grow every day, getting to know her and seeing her get to know me. The biggest surprise is how much I love just being on mat leave with her. I thought I would be itching to get back to work right away but I’m loving our days together and the time is flying by! The biggest joys are moments when I realize how far I’ve come since she was born. From getting around to navigating all the equipment and establishing a routine. It’s so rewarding to think back on where you started and realize you kind of have the hang of it. The biggest challenges were definitely around my recovery. I didn’t know how painful and difficult postpartum would be, physically and mentally.
A: This is really difficult and something I am still trying to figure out. I have quickly learned I can’t actually work and be with Lily at the same time. At first, I was checking emails throughout the day and trying to respond while I’m with her. It’s distracting and I also like to give her my full attention when we’re together. So now I don’t check my email all day and will sit down for an hour or two after she goes to bed to answer emails, write blog posts, respond to DMs, etc. It’s hard because I’m not responding within the typical 9-5 hours but it’s the best I can do. I’m hoping to find part-time help so I can dedicate a couple of days a week to work.
A: It feels like I’m starting from scratch which is really humbling for someone who teaches fitness for a living. I feel very weak and have lost so much of my strength. I only workout once or twice a week right now when someone watches Lily. My goal is to make it to 3-4 times a week to regain my strength so I can start teaching again.
A: I love spinning postpartum. It’s always been my favourite workout. It’s funny, I used to teach mom and baby classes but haven’t made it to any now that I have my own baby. Lily won’t really chill out in her bucket or flop on a mat without me entertaining her. Sadly I have to get my workout in without her.
A: RAVENOUS!!! People always talk about pregnancy cravings but I think nursing cravings are on a whole other level. I try to eat balanced, nutritious meals and make sure I get a good mix of healthy fats and whole grains to maintain my milk supply. I crave sugar a lot more now than I did with pregnancy. I think it’s because I’m always tired and that triggers sugar cravings.
A: Well the Paige panel jeans I got from Ani and Wren have remained a staple. You told me I would be in them postpartum - and that is definitely true. I also love a good linen button-down and oversized v-neck t-shirts that I can just pull down to nurse in.
A: Anything from my mom’s kitchen! Or Kiyo for sushi.
A: Netflix and snacks. Minni eggs and cheddar crispy minis if we’re getting specific.
A: Do not be afraid to ask for help! As women, we want to do it all ourselves but surrendering to the challenges and allowing people to come in my life and help me has been vital in this journey. Also, start a TV show. With lots of seasons. It will get you through the fourth trimester. 😊
